Mr Keune said he took great satisfaction from communicating with his customers and finding out what they needed to get the job done.
He said being a successful small business owner was about doing the "fundamentals" right: offering friendly, prompt service, expert advice and low prices.

He noted Home Timber and Hardware was a proud supporter of the community's clubs, including golf and bowls, and that was something larger chain businesses would not do.
Home Timber and Hardware employs two other people, three when it's busy, aside from Mr Keune.
The business is open 8am-5pm Monday- Friday, and 8am-noon on Saturday.
