All good things come in threes, even triplet calves

APPARENTLY two's company and three's a crowd - but one mumma Angus cow is taking three newborn calves like she was born for the job.

Left Hand Branch farmer Ian Lindenmayer came across triplet calves about two weeks ago when he was mustering cattle.

"I couldn't believe my eyes when I found the three of them," Mr Lindenmayer said.

"I had a look around to see if there was another cow... but she was mothering them all from the start."

Mr Lindenmayer made the decision to move the mother and calves closer to the house to help her with extra feed.

"If she was left out in the paddock she'd lose her condition really quickly," Mr Lindenmayer said.

The two steers and one heifer have fitted into their new life well, learning to eat grain.

Mr Lindenmayer said with the calves eating grains, it would reduce the stress on their mother.

"For triplets, they're really big calves as far as calf sizes go for multiple births," he said.

The calves were produced by Mr Lindenmayer's pure-bred Angus cow and his Charolais bull.

"I always seemed to think multiple births came from the mother's side, but this bull is starting to prove it wrong," he said.

The third generation farmer said it was the first time anyone in his family had encountered triplets.

"I've had cattle all my life and no one has spoken of triplets before," he said.

"There has been a few sets of twins by the same bull."

According to UDSA Meat and Animal Research centre, cows have a capability to gestate twin calves.

Available statistics reveal the chance of triplets is 105,000 to one, but this refers to artificial insemination.

Experts say triplet calves are a statistical miracle.
