American expat’s election fears after brother’s COVID death

AMERICAN-BORN Dameon Jamie has lived in Cairns since 2004 and been an Australian citizen since 2007.

But with the death of his brother, Tim Hopping, to coronavirus, and one of the most contentious elections in history looming, he's worried for the future of his home country.

Mr Jamie, who left the US to move to Bali on the eve of the Bush-versus-Gore election 20 years ago, learned of his brother's death to coronavirus in August.

He was one of over 230,000 to die from the virus in the US.

Mr Jamie said he regretted being unable to be there for his brother.

"He died alone; he had his family but they couldn't be with him while he was in quarantine, so they had been checking in with him via phone," he said.

"I feel bad for anybody that has to pass alone or has family and can't see them. We have a son in San Diego and they had a daughter this year, our first granddaughter, and we weren't able to be there for that."

Mr Jamie said President Donald Trump had utterly mismanaged the virus, and he praised the leaders in Australia and Queensland specifically in comparison.

"Here, when people wanted to stop the spread, they stuck together for the benefit of everyone, and they did not have that in America," he said.

"The current leadership under Donald Trump either sees it as a hoax, or not worth shutting down for … and I still see people in America who believe that."
