Mundubbera backpacker campsite opens for 2nd year

WHEN Barbara Dell'Orfano was backpacking in Mundubbera four years ago, she could only dream of the place she now manages.

The Mundubbera Seasonal Workers Camp, behind the Bowls Club, is now in its second year and its manager Ms Dell'Orfano is excited for the backpackers to arrive.

"When I was backpacking, I was looking for something like this," Ms Dell'Orfano said.

"You feel welcome here; you feel part of the community.

"There is support."

The camp was opened last year by the North Burnett Regional Council and is run by the Three Rivers Tourist Park, with Ms Dell'Orfano managing it.

For $5 a week, backpackers are able to set up camp while they look for work.

There is a catch though - the backpackers have to help out the community by doing six hours of community service work each week.

After three weeks they move on to other places of accommodation in the area.

Over the past six months, the camp welcomed more than 150 backpackers.

Ms Dell'Orfano said they were expecting slightly more this year.

"This year people know about this place," she said.

"I get phone calls everyday from backpackers saying my friend stayed there and I want to come too.

"It's in such a beautiful spot."Ms Dell'Orfano said she tried to ensure backpackers had a great time in Mundubbera and could find good work.

"We want people to know you will have a great experience and not get ripped off.

"People will say Mundubbera is the best place to go.

"We want them to enjoy the time.

"If they don't, they'll say everything was terrible."

Ms Dell'Orfano the concept should be replicated by other towns across the country.

"Council should be proud of themselves for this idea."
