BEST WALK EVER: Dog joins in half-marathon, finishes 6th

RUNNING a half marathon is never easy, but this surprise entrant at least made it a little happier.

Ludivine the dog -- a two-year-old hound -- entered a 21km race after trotting out the front door of its Alabama home to take care of business.

Instead of wandering back inside, the curious Ludivine managed to kncok over the Elkmont Half Marathon in 1:32:56 and earned a medal without her owner April Hamlin realising she had gone for a run.

She told Runner's World:

"All I did was open the door, and she ran the race on her own accord," Ms Hamlin said

"My first reaction was that I was embarrassed and worried that she had possibly gotten in the way of the other runners."

She realised her dog's racing only when friends sent her photos from the finish line.

Ludivine has a reputation for wandering around the town, so Ms Hamlin wasn't surprised that she wasn't in the house.

"She's laid back and friendly, so I can't believe she ran the whole half marathon because she's actually really lazy," Ms Hamlin said.

Her owner is also not a runner.

It appears the dog approached the crowd at the starting line just before the starting shot was fired.

Once everyone began to run, Ludivine joined in.

She trailed 4th place-getting Jim Clemens for most of the way.

Her race time and position is even more impressive when Mr Clemens tells of Ludivine disappearing into the woods, running through streams and even investigating a dead rabbit.

Each time she would overtake Mr Clemens, chase down the leaders, then romp around a little more.
