IT SEEMS big personalities are more engaging than restaurant dreams in free to air's new reality cooking show battle.
Despite its many similarities with My Kitchen Rules, Nine's The Hotplate drew a significantly larger audience last night than Seven's Restaurant Revolution.
But neither shows' debut managed to crack the important one-million viewership mark.
The Hotplate attracted 784,000 viewers across the five metro cities while Restaurant Revolution didn't even make the Top 10 with only 676,000 metro viewers.
The five most-watched shows of the night were all news programs, led by Nine's A Current Affair and national news programs.
The Hotplate was the most-watched non-news program of the night even though some viewers took to Twitter to declare it a rip-off of MKR and its predecessor My Restaurant Rules, as well as a "poor man's MasterChef".
The first episode saw mother and daughter Christina and Tania host a private dinner, where they put up food from their Italian restaurant Christina's for judging by hosts Tom Parker Bowles and Scott Pickett and their fellow competitors.
Restaurant Revolution, meanwhile, introduced five teams of varying numbers who had to pitch the concepts for their pop-up restaurants to an expert panel including renowned chef Neil Perry.
The 7.30pm time slot will get even more competitive tonight with the premiere of the third season of Channel 10's dating show The Bachelor.
