Big roll up at Fiji bowls comp

LAST month Leo and Lyn Heaton of Biggenden along with brother Greg Thompson of Gayndah and a Roma friend flew to Fiji for the Sunny West International Carnival at the NADI Sports and Social Club. Mrs Heaton said "What can I say?” was the catch phrase of the bowls tournament.

"It was such a great experience, friendly people, being greeted a 100 times a day with "Bulla” meaning hello, or cheers,” she said.

The tour, organised by Graeme and Kerri Kath of Graker Tours from Toowoomba, is an annual event with some bowlers taking their 11th trip this time round.

Mrs Heaton said the carnival was held each May, coming into their winter, which is like our summer.

"Bowlers from all around the world attend,” she said.

Mrs Heaton said during their 11 days over there besides travel days, they played seven days of bowls, covering fours and pairs.

"We did have some wins and of course some losses.

"The days not playing bowls were spent shopping, touring Fiji and one of the South Sea Islands.

"These were all new experiences.”

She said sports united people and that was certainly the case in Fiji.

"With 32 on tour we certainly knew each other a whole lot better at the end of this amazing tour,” she said.
