A BROWN snake slithering near the dashboard surprised a truck driver, who veered off the road and crashed at Binjour Range this afternoon.

The man told Gayndah police the snake had emerged near the driver's door as he travelled downhill towards Gayndah.

Senior Constable Wyatt Telford said the man had veered left, off the side of the road, while maintaining control of the wheel with one hand.

After avoiding a steep drop to the gully, he steered across the road and up an embankment.

The truck continued over a barbed wire fence two times before coming crashing among trees.

Police attended the scene, after receiving a call at 12.15pm.

"The driver had no injuries and was a little bit shaken," Snr Const Telford said.

"He was transported by police to hospital for a check-up.

"A witness said he was travelling safely (and) under the speed limit down the range."

The man told police he had found a small brown snake near the tachometer in recent days, but was surprised by a larger brown snake today.

Snr Const Telford said he had been unable to locate the snake in or near the cabin.

"A heavy vehicle removal tow truck is coming up from Brisbane and the truck will be removed early tomorrow," Snr Const Telford said.

While the empty trailer was unscathed, except for a few scratches, the cabin was damaged by trees.

SES Controller David Wilson said the SES would remove the trees before the truck was towed.
