The Hotplate's Scott Pickett's motoring life
IN A world where it's fashionable to love all things good and efficient and hybridy, it's refreshing to find a man in love with pure old-fashioned grunt.
Scott Pickett, co-host of Nine's The Hotplate, is a man keen to enjoy his success by treating himself to a Greenie's nightmare: a 4x4 SUV with turbo V8 to use on Melbourne's crowded streets.
For that, we car enthusiasts salute him with a tinge of jealousy.
Eager to learn more, we threw our motoring-related questions at the award-winning chef while he was on a break from filming duties.
What was your first car?
It was a red 1985 Mitsubishi Colt sedan that was my mother's car. She told me it was the deal of the century. I had been saving for a Torana but she persuaded me to buy it off her for $6000.
We still fight over the deal today. Mum still says it was the deal of the century, but I'm not sure I agree with that.
What are you driving now?
A Porsche Cayenne Turbo with 4.8-litre V8. It's black on black with custom-painted black rims.
What cars did your family have while you were growing up?
When I was young I remember the parents having a white VN Commodore and a white Nissan Pulsar.
What is your greatest frustration on the road?
People who don't know where they are going, typically Sunday drivers. You need to drive like you're going somewhere, isn't that why you're in the car?
Do you have any preferred driving music?
Hilltop Hoods, Foo Fighters and Metallica - nice and loud!
If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be and why?
Triple F1 World Champion Ayrton Senna. One of the most skilful and talented race car drivers in the world who met with a tragic end.
What is your dream car and why?
An Aston Martin Vanquish. And why? It's James Bond's car.

Born: Melbourne, Victoria.
Resume: Starting his career as an apprentice chef in South Australian restaurants, Scott secured gold at Salon Culinaire aged just 18. Positions at Paul Bocuse, Langton's Restaurant, Brasserie by Philippe Mouchel and three-hatted Ondine followed, before a move to London at two Michelin star restaurant The Square. He represented Australia at the Bocuse D'or in 2005 before joining The Point Restaurant Albert Park, helping the eatery win numerous awards. His own restaurants followed, the one-hatted Estelle in Northcote and two-hatted Saint Crispin in Collingwood. This year he was nominated for Chef of the Year.
