GREATEST CHALLENGE: The path of Cania Gorge's Overhang bushwalk.
GREATEST CHALLENGE: The path of Cania Gorge's Overhang bushwalk. Jack Lawrie

Cania's climbs not meant for me

SINCE I've been living in Monto, I've told a lot of people how much I love walking and how I can't wait to tackle the Cania Gorge selection of bushwalking trails.

The thing is, that's been mostly a lie I've told myself, and others, to fool myself the bachelor life in a small town with a desk job won't eventually destroy me.

But with the belly growing ever outward, I took advantage of my mother's visit to town this week to go on a shared hike, whereupon I learned that it was just as well I put it off for as long as I did because without accompaniment I may have fallen over.

I suffer from strabismus, an eye condition I've had since birth that among other things, leaves me with terrible depth perception.

Which makes descending stairs without a handrail an exercise in terror.

See, many of the Cania hikes, particularly the Giant Chair Lookout, which is nothing BUT stairs, required me to undertake the walk with a hand on Mum's shoulder just to keep balance.

Going it alone would put my life, and by extension the town of Monto's journalistic coverage, in jeopardy and therefore for the good of the community, I must avoid it and stay fat.

Which is a shame, because there are some beautiful tracks out there and I advise anyone to take the opportunity to visit and see for yourself.

Just make sure you bring a buddy along.
