Christensen: No point in new aged care beds for Collinsville

IT'S ALL eyes on the State and Federal governments.

Member for Mirani Jim Pearce has called on senior Members of Parliament to recognise it is a "matter of urgency" to unite and prevent the closure of Collinsville's only aged care facility.

Mr Pearce does not think the solution to move Hillside Haven residents to Murroona Gardens Aged Care Facility in Bowen is the right one.

"We need to, as a matter of urgency, sit down, put the facts on the table and consider what options are available to ensure Hillside Haven is kept operating in Collinsville", he said.

This week, Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen announced that Mackay region aged care facilities would get a boost of more than 100 new residential places, through the 2015 Aged Care Approvals Round, within the next year.

Mr Christensen said there was "no correlation" between the initiative and Hillside Haven.

"There would be no point in the Federal Government giving 100 new aged care beds to Collinsville or any extra aged care beds to (that area). They have 12 aged care beds available and only nine of those are filled," he said.

"If we can't find a provider, we're talking about taking them only an hour down the road from the Collinsville community."

Mr Christensen said that if a provider was to jump on board, there would need to be a couple of million spent on the facility to bring it up to scratch and meet standards.
