Coast seafood outlet to feature on SBS cooking show

SINCE Dan Learoyd was a child growing up on the Sunshine Coast, catching fish and crabs in local rivers recreationally, he knew seafood and fishing were his passions.

As natural progression took its course, Dan found himself a deckhand on a commercial fishing boat, then graduating to skipper.

Today he owns Soulfish Seafoods, a company quickly gaining popularity for its practices, and taking quality, fresh seafood to a whole new level.

Dan has been endorsed by the Great Barrier Marine Park Authority as a Reef Guardian Fisher, in part due to his environmentally sound fishing practices.

These strategic techniques, such as using one-line-one-hook in order to reduce the impact on the surrounding environment, are some of the ways Dan ensures he is kind to the environment without sacrificing quality.

He also volunteers his time by collaborating with GBRMPA, helping to protect the Great Barrier Reef by working with other operators on sustainability measures.

Soulfish frequently sells at the Shane Stanley Farmers Markets in Noosa And Kawana Waters, where food sold through the markets is either personally caught from Dan's boats, or his friends, some of whom are also Reef Guardian Fishers.

Customers aren't the only ones noticing the splash Dan has made in the market; his efforts are recognised by celebrity chefs, as well as Australian broadcaster SBS.

On Thursday a new television series, Peter Kuruvita Coastal Kitchen, begins on SBS, highlighting Soulfish, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast.

Soulfish, the only seafood business that is currently processing products like green prawns, squid, and cuttlefish that haven't been dipped in preservatives, is quickly becoming a favourite for chefs and customers alike.

Dan's passion is to educate people on not only sustainable practices, but also how to prepare and use his fresh produce, working with highly regarded chefs on the Sunshine Coast.

The company is growing quickly, allowing Dan to add a new vessel to the formerly six-boat fleet.

Dan, whose been fishing for over 17 years, often takes the boats as far north as the Torres Strait and as far south as Townsville.

The new vessel fishes off the Sunshine Coast around four hours from shore, between Noosa and Fraser Island, helping to meet growing demand while still using all of the same sustainable practices.

This vessel, called the Southeastern, is already averaging one to two trips per week.
