Colonel's secret recipe leak put to the test

IT'S the story that's captured the hearts - or at the very least clogged arteries - of millions.

The culinary holy grail, Colonel Harland Sander's secret 11 herbs and spices leaked to the world so everyone can cook it at home.

But does it taste like the real thing?

The team at the Chicago Tribune which first broke the story saying Kentucky man Joe Ledington claimed to have found the secret recipe tucked inside a scrapbook kept by his Aunt Claudia - who was Sander's second wife.

The recipe as he found it read:

11 Spices - Mix With 2 Cups White Fl.

1) 2/3 Ts Salt

2) 1/2 Ts Thyme

3) 1/2 Ts Basil

4) 1/3 Ts Origino (sic)

5) 1 Ts Celery Salt

6) 1 Ts Black Pepper

7) 1 Ts Dried Mustard

8) 4 Ts Paprika

9) 2 Ts Garlic Salt

10) 1 Ts Ground Ginger

11) 3 Ts White Pepper

However the lingering question for the Tribune's journalists was whether or not the secret mix, if made correctly could deliver the same flavour as the famed red and white striped restaurants push over the counter each and every time you go in.

The first question that needed answered was whether the recipe should be read as tablespoons or teaspoons but as soon as the first batch was bitten into it was clear the big spoons were the go.

Then they decided the chicken was coming out too dark - instead of the caramel brown you usually get when you grab a bucket.

So, the fryer was turned down to 350 degrees and then everyone thought it was almost right - there was just something missing.

That ingredient turned out to be MSG and once that was added it was decided the leaked recipe was finger looking good just like the Colonel's.

Kentucky fried Chicken Australia has been contacted and asked to confirm if the Australian version also contains MSG.
