Community gathers to show its support

THE community spirit was alive and well at the Gayndah Sportsman's Lunch, with more than $25,000 raised through raffles, auctions and tickets.

The event featured guest speakers such as renowned rugby league coach Wayne Bennett, retired and famed racing writer Bart Sinclair and Courier Mail sports reporter Bernie Pramberg.

Jockey club president Stuart Kirk said it was great to see the whole community show their support.

"You only had to go to the sportsman's lunch to see how strong it was, it was good to see people coming for a common cause,” Mr Kirk said.

"Events like the races and rugby league gives thetown something tocelebrate.”

A small hand-made octopus with a beanie and socks was auctioned for more than $800.

Mr Kirk said the highlight of the day was hearing from the guest speakers.

"Wayne Bennett and Bart Sinclair were captivating speakers,” he said.

"I'd like to thank the committee that helped organise the event and those who catered.”
