PERCHED on a rise just off the Leichhardt Hwy, you could almost be forgiven for missing the Guluguba State School, student population: 13.

Not on Saturday, however.

The school's oval was a sea of colourful costumes as 17 teams went head to head at the inaugural Guluguba State School Cricket Day.

Organiser of the P&C fundraiser, Amie Pearce, said the day was a resounding success, and the school hoped it would become an annual event.

"The purpose of the day is to raise money for the school, while also providing an enjoyable day out for the community,” Mrs Pearce said.

"We were overwhelmed with the support we received from the community with spectators and the amount of team nominations we received.

"It's so dry everywhere. This gives people a day off from the drought.”

The Ring Ins snatched victory from the ABH Ball Busters in the final and both teams kindly donated their prizemoney back to the school.

Night-time entertainment included a tug-o-war competition, a charity auction and a DJ, who played until late.

Mrs Pearce said many revellers camped the night and the school put on a Sunday breakfast.

"I was so pleased that we could run an enjoyable day like this and give something back to our community, which always gives and supports our little school,” she said.
