Day intent on winning, not defending

GOLF: World No.1 Jason Day has been careful not to utter the words "back to back”, but is feeling confident about his game before embarking on his US PGA Championship defence at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey starting tonight.

The Queenslander won his maiden major at the same tournament last year, at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, in a memorable final-day battle with gun American Jordan Speith.

"I feel good about my game,” Day said.

"I'm hitting a lot of good shots and that has given me confidence. I should be good to go.”

Day has won seven titles in the past year and flirted with more major success, tying for 10th at the Masters and eighth at the US Open.

His focus, however, is not on defending his crown, especially on a different course, but on achieving new feats.

"I never really look at it as defending,” he said.

"I try to win it again. That's the mentality.”

World No.2 Dustin Johnson made his major breakthrough last month in winning the US Open at Oakmont, Pennsylvania.

The American also won a World Golf Championship event at Firestone and tied for ninth at the British Open, bolstering his confidence entering the final major of the year.

"I think the game is in really good shape,” Johnson said.

Johnson is the favourite at $9, with Rory McIlroy on $10 and Day $11.

Fellow Aussie and 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott ($31) is equal eighth favourite.
