What test strip subsidy changes mean for type 2 diabetics

THE 2731 Gladstone type two diabetics will add another trip to the doctor every six months if they want to continue to buy cheap test strips.

Arrangements for the supply of subsidised test strips were changed on July 1, meaning people who are not reliant on insulin will receive an initial six-month supply of test strips, but will only remain eligible for strips if they are specified by a doctor or other health provider.

Some newspapers and television outlets reported on Sunday that the subsidy would be removed, meaning it would cost up to $60 for the strips, which are at the subsidised price of $1.20.

However Diabetes Queensland has clarified this was only the case if the person was not given the tick by a doctor.

"Based on advice from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee, NDSS registrants not on insulin will receive an initial six-month supply, but will remain eligible only if their need for strips is specified by a doctor," a spokesman said.

"Diabetes Queensland is following developments very closely.

"The key factor is that access to strips is decided by your health professional, usually a GP. If you visit your HP/GP every six months, based on their advice, you can retain ongoing access to strips."
