IN THE wake of Father's Day, Sammy Ray Jones may have missed out on a new pair of socks, but instead he got the home delivery of his third child Haddasha Melanie Jones.

After the uneventful births of their first two children Moshe and Shekinah, Sammy and his wife Ether thought they had childbirth down pat.

Their bags were packed, the hospital was booked and expected them, but things took an unexpected turn when Ether went from mild contractions to full blown labour within an hour and a half.

Sammy delivered Haddasha on the lounge room floor of their Mt Coolum home while on the phone with paramedics on Friday morning.

Sammy said his fatherly instincts kicked in and he sprang into action.

"I've never seen anything happen so quickly and so fast," he said.

"I just knew I had to keep a clear head and to do what needed to be been done.

"I just trusted that we could do the right thing and just made sure the cord was free.

"It was crazy.

"We're just blown away that she was born in our Mt Coolum home."

Sammy's mother Melanie who is a mother of seven was also on hand to lend her support to Ether.

Ether said it was a beautiful thing to have Melanie there, because she had always wanted a home birth, so Ether gave Haddasha the middle name Melanie in honour of her grandmother.

"It was her (Melanie's) dream to have a home birth and I had always wanted one, but I didn't make my mind up and it just happened," Ether said.

"It was so fast and unexpected, but I wasn't worried at all.

"He (Sammy) woke me up to go, but I said no because I was timing myself.

"But then it was just coming.

"I didn't even think about it - I just thought about it coming out.

"It (homebirth) was nice - definitely more special."

Ether said she was a little sad that she couldn't get to the shops and get Sammy a Father's Day present, but she said a kiss would have to

suffice.

They weren't deterred by the home birth experience and said they wouldn't rule out doing it all over again for their fourth and final child.

Haddasha was born without any medical complications and is healthy.

Haddasha Melanie Jones was born on Friday, September 4, at 6.04am weighing 3.2kg and was named after a Jewish queen.
