Eighth Queensland measles case in two weeks

TWO more measles cases have been reported in Queensland, taking numbers for the past fortnight to eight.

The pair had visited QE2 Hospital emergency department between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday and Logan Hospital emergency department on Sunday at 10.30am and again on Monday at 6pm while not knowing they were infectious.

Their diagnoses takes the number of measles cases in Queensland this year to 33 - more than double the 14 recorded for the whole of 2018.

Metro South Health public health physician Kari Jarvinen said the latest cases visited Main Street Medical and Dental Centre and Queensland Diagnostic Imaging at Beenleigh, south of Brisbane, between 3.30pm and 7.40pm on October 3.

They were also at the 7-Eleven at Juers Street in Kingston South before 10am last Saturday.

Dr Jarvinen said people who had visited any of these locations should be alert for measles symptoms and should seek medical advice if they become ill.

"Symptoms usually start around seven to 10 days after contact with a person with measles but sometimes longer, so anyone who develops measles-like symptoms within the next fortnight should contact their general practitioner for advice," he said.

"It is very important to call the medical practice first to say you could have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading the disease to others."

Dr Jarvinen said measles could be a serious illness with complications including pneumonia and encephalitis, inflammation of the brain, which could be fatal.

Free vaccines are available to anyone who has not had two documented doses of the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine or had proven measles.
