'Out with a bang': Retiring star announces farewell tour

IT'S the end of the yellow brick road for Elton John.

The legendary singer made the shock announcement that he will quit touring to spend more time with his family at a gala event in New York.

However, in true Elton John style, he said he would "go out with a bang" with a global tour that will begin this September and won't end until 2021.

"It will be the last time that I'm touring and travelling the world, because my priorities have changed," John told several guests.

"My priorities now are my children and my husband and my family."

John has two children with husband David Furnish.

Despite recent scares, John said his health wasn't an issue and didn't bear any weight in his decision.

The announcement came after a mini-concert and virtual reality presentation about his career that had the performer reflecting on his "amazing life and amazing career".

But John allayed any fears that his decision would end his glittering career, claiming: "I will be creative, hopefully, until the day I die".

John's decision comes on the heels of Neil Diamond announcing his retirement from touring following his recent diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

"It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring. I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years," said Diamond.

"My sincerest apologies to everyone who purchased tickets and were planning to come to the upcoming shows.

"I plan to remain active in writing, recording and other projects for a long time to come.

"My thanks goes out to my loyal and devoted audiences around the world. You will always have my appreciation for your support and encouragement. This ride has been 'so good, so good, so good' thanks to you."
