Energy relief just weeks away

PENSIONERS, carers, single mums and veterans are all about to get a one-off cash injection from the Federal Government with the Energy Assistance Payment weeks away from hitting bank accounts.

The payment, included in the 2019-20 Budget, is $75 for eligible singles, and $125 for eligible couples.

The payments are exempt from income tax.

"We are in a position to offer this support because of our strong economic management,” Member for Flynn Ken O'Dowd said.

The payments are for people receiving certain social security and support payments, including Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment, Parenting Payment, Austudy, Newstart Allowance, Service Pension, Youth Allowance, and Farm Household Allowance.

Around five million people are expected to be eligible for an Energy Assistance Payment.

The money does not have to be spent on energy bills.

The Federal Government courted controversy when it first announced the payment in the Budget, as it excluded certain social security payments such as the Newstart Allowance.
