Faith healer let baby die 'because God doesn't make mistakes'

A COUPLE have been charged with manslaughter after refusing medics the chance to give their sick daughter life-saving treatment saying "God doesn't make mistakes."

Rachel Piland, 30, and her husband, 36-year-old Joshua, stunned doctors in Lansing, Michigan, when they refused permission for baby Abigail to have jaundice treatment just days after she was born.

When a midwife warned them Abigail could die or suffer severe brain damage if left untreated, Rachel chanted "God doesn't make mistakes" and insisted she was fine.

When tiny Abigail started to cough up blood, Rachel laid her on a windowsill and started warming her with a hairdryer, before listening to hours of sermons.

Rachel's mother Rebecca discovered Abigail's lifeless body the next morning.

Joshua took the tiny tot's corpse upstairs, at which point the couple knelt beside it and prayed for her resurrection instead of calling an ambulance.

Officers arrested the pair after Rachel's brother called from California and told them of Abigail's death.

Her autopsy confirmed that she died from unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia and kernicterus - conditions related to jaundice.

If treated, she would have more than likely survived, a police spokesman said.

Rachel and Joshua were each charged with a single count of involuntary manslaughter and released after posting $75,000 bond on September 21.

They face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
