Federer continues remarkable renaissance

TENNIS: Roger Federer's remarkable renaissance has continued with the Swiss maestro defeating countryman Stan Wawrinka 6-4 7-5 to win a record-tying fifth Indian Wells title.

Federer surprised most observers by winning his 18th grand slam singles title in January at the Australian Open.

The 35-year-old had an injury-interrupted season in 2016 but fought back to defeat Rafael Nadal in a thrilling five-set final in Melbourne.

Now the veteran has set another record, becoming the oldest champion in the Indian Wells tournament's history, surpassing Jimmy Connors, who was 31 years and five months when he won in 1981.

Federer also equalled the record of five titles in California, held by Novak Djokovic, who lost in the fourth round, while winning his 90th career title, keeping him third behind Connors and Ivan Lendl on the all-time list in the Open era.

The Swiss star dropped serve just once in five matches, losing the first game of the second set against Wawrinka.

Federer advanced to the semi-finals via walkover when Nick Kyrgios withdrew with food poisoning.

In an all-Russian women's final, Elena Vesnina defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 7-5 6-4.
