Fireys battling another blaze south of Sarina

UPDATE, TUESDAY 11AM: FOUR firefighting crews are on their way to help with the blaze burning near St Lawrence.

The bushfire is burning at the intersection of Bruce Highway and Scheider's Rd at Kalarka.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said one crew stayed at the location overnight after the western side of the fire near Schaffer Rd was brought under control.

"There's still a bit of active fire on the eastern side," the QFES spokeswoman said.

"Four units are returning today."

UPDATE, MONDAY 9.10PM: TWO firefighting crews remain at the scene of a bushfire burning about an hour south of Sarina.

The blaze is burning along Scheider's Rd at Kalarka near St Lawrence.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said the fire had "blackened out" around the homes that were earlier under threat.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads advised the smoke hazard along the Bruce Highway had now cleared.

UPDATE, MONDAY 6.50pm: FIREFIGHTING crews have been able to protect homes that were initially in the firing line of a blaze burning south of Sarina.

The bushfire is burning along both sides of Schneiders Rd at Kalarka, about 100km from Mackay.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said four crews were now on the scene but they had stood down any further crews from needing to help control the blaze.

EARLIER, MONDAY 5.50pm: EXTRA firefighting crews are on their way to help control a bushfire burning south of Sarina.

One crew is already on scene at the fire along Schneiders Rd at Kalarka with another two on their way.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said the fire was on both sides of the road and it had the potential to jump the highway.

"They're trying to stop it on the southern side of Schneiders Rd," the QFES spokesman said.

A QFES warning statement issued said the fire broke out earlier today but did not pose a threat to property until now.

"Firefighters are constructing fire breaks and will later carry out backburning operations to contain the fire," the statement said.

"Nearby residents may be affected by smoke throughout the evening.

"Residents are asked to close windows and doors and if suffering from a respiratory condition, keep medications close by.

"Motorists should drive with caution and to conditions.

"If residents are concerned their property is under threat, they are advised to call Triple-0 immediately."

The QFES spokesman said there was a possibility the fire may have started from a lightning strike.

The fire adds to the numerous blazes in the Sarina region that firefighters have needed to attend in recent weeks.
