Fitness instructor ticked off by Heart Foundation claims

FITNESS instructor David Holleran said the Heart Foundation's claims that the North Burnett is the most physically inactive region in country are "absolutely ludicrous”.

The organisation's 2019 Heart Map placed the North Burnett in first place when they found 82 per cent of residents don't exercise.

"I find that claim offensive, so offensive,” Holleran said.

"North Burnett residents are incredibly active.

"You go down any time, morning or night, and the amount of people you'll see walking along the river, playing touch or doing some form of exercise is amazing.”

Data for insufficient exercise was modelled on the 2014-2015 National Health Survey and adjusted for ageing populations.

"I didn't answer any surveys,” Holleran said.

"Even within the nursing homes they do chair aerobics and those sorts of things.”

Holleran no longer teaches classes in Mundubbera but he runs fitness classes in Gayndah.

He doesn't believe Gayndah's YMCA closing down had any affect on locals' physical activity.

"It was for safety reasons more than anything else and it was mismanaged,” Holleran said.

"I was one of the instigators in getting it closed down after everything I had been told about it.”

Holleran said it's not up to the council to fund a gym for the community.

He said himself and his wife wrote a grant application to get Mundubbera a gym years ago.

"At one stage we had 300 members going to the gym, you don't get that at some gyms in Brisbane.”

Last year Holleran took out the world record for finishing the world's longest solo obstacle course at the Eidsvold Showgrounds.
