Former police officer found not guilty of rape while on duty
Trent Christopher Birthisel, 31, walked free after a jury found him not guilty on five counts of raping a 20-year-old woman while on duty in 2014.
"I'm just happy it's all over," he said outside the courthouse.
The 20-year-old woman, who sat in the public gallery with her family, cried as the jury delivered its verdict just after noon today.
Mr Birthisel had already resigned from the police force as a result of the charges.
However, a Mackay woman yelled insults at Mr Birthisel as he left the Mackay Courthouse.
"Disgusting. How are you still walking the streets? Disgusting piece of (expletive)," Caryn Costello said.
Ms Costello said she wasn't a family member but she had been following the case.
