Gala day pushes athletes

SPORT GALA: It was a full-on day of competition for teams from North Burnett who travelled out to Monto last Thursday for the sport gala draw.

Players from Gayndah, Mundubbera, Isis, Monto and Eidsvold were in full force in the under 13s, 15s and opens netball and rugby league.

Nine teams competed in the netball, three from each division.

Monto State High teacher Danielle Sinclair said the day was more about participation.

"We've got roughly 90 kids in the netball, which is great,” Sinclair said.

"We (Monto) generally host the gala day, which is good for us; there's extra work in organising but we don't have to organise buses.”

Representatives from Queensland NRL, who facilitated the rugby events down at the Combined Sports Field were impressed with the North Burnett teams' vigour.

NRL Central Wide Bay development officer Dwayne McKay said he saw good spirits while refereeing the opens game.

"Yeah, it's a great day and their in good spirits, maximum participation and a heap of fun,” McKay said.

The games were kept short to move through the teams at a quick pace.

"I think you can see their fitness, but because it's nine-a-side on a large field, by the end of the day they're running out of puff,” McKay said.

League had an especially high turnout, with four teams for each of the three divisions.

Monto St Johns Ambulance was on standby and kept busy throughout the day.

There were three injuries reported from the netballers, and one from league.

Most were minor hands-and-fingers injuries, though.

"Accidents happen all the time in sport and you just treat it as you would normally,” Sinclair said.
