YOUNG athletes from across the North Burnett and beyond converged on Burnett State College on Friday for the 2019 North Burnett District Athletics Carnival.

Monto State High School took out the honours overall on 427 points, ahead of second-placed Isis District State High School on 305 points, third-placegetters Burnett State College on 260 points, Mundubbera State School on 101 points, and Biggenden and Eidsvold State Schools tied on 23 points.

Monto State High School physical education teacher Anthony Gronert said the victory was unexpected and the school had broken a more-than decade-long drought at the carnival.

"I really wasn't expecting us to take down the two bigger schools, but I couldn't be prouder," Mr Gronert said.

"2008 was the last time we won, so it's been a big drought for us, and as a much smaller school than Burnett State College or Isis District State High School, it's always been a tough ask of us, but our participation has always been strong."

Mr Gronert heaped praise on the athletes from his school.

"Our kids just did outstanding - everyone we took just managed to do really well, and surprisingly we took top spot," he said.

"I'm super proud, I've been working with a lot of these kids for a long time.

"They've been training really, really hard, and it's good to see them finally get those results."

Monto didn't just take out the overall win - six of the 12 age champions came from the school.

Two Monto students also smashed event records: Lailah Mitchell added 24 centimtres to a 21-year-old record in the 16 years girls long jump; and Lizzie Younger shaved more than 22 seconds from a 32-year-old record in the 15 years girls 1500m.
