Gayndah defence is on fire

Rugby league: The Gayndah Gladiators have secured supremacy over the Mundubbera Tigers after defeating them for the third time this season.

The Gladiators managed to score 26 unanswered points in the first half before the Tigers showed extra grit in defence, holding out Gayndah on their own line for 21 minutes before the Gladiators were able to cross.

Gayndah player Jamie Kirk said the Tigers stepped up their defence in the second half, making it more difficult for them to score.

"They did play well later in the game,” Kirk said.

Kirk suffered a shoulder injury during pre-season but was still able to play in seven games so far this season.

"The shoulder is holding up pretty well,” Kirk said.

"The cold isn't really hurting it too much.”

The Gladiators defeated the Tigers 36-6, with the Tigers managing to score late in the second half before losing two players. One was sin-binned while another was sent off just minutes later.

Kirk said the feeling in the changing room after the game was one of high spirits.

"The boys are feeling pretty good,” Kirk said.

Blake Augustine continued to pile on the points in his first season for the Gladiators, scoring a try and slotting three conversions.

The Gladiator defence was a standout in the game, with two-man tackles stopping many of the Tigers' hit-ups in their tracks and coach Rob Linskett citing defence as key to the Gayndah game.

"Good defence is what wins games,” Linskett said.

Kirk said the Gladiators remained undefeated in the 2017 season and looked to continue their run of top form.

"It was a good win tonight and hopefully we'll keep the streak going,” the Gayndah player said.
