High school cattle club takes top prizes at Monto Show

MADDISON Low's goal is to compete at the Ekka this year, and she is well on her way to doing so.

The Monto State High School cattle club member came first in the 15-25 years paraders category at the Monto and District and Annual Show, which means she is through to regionals.

"I qualified for regionals last year but because of my age that's as far as you can go," she said.

Using a cattle club beast, the preparation process paid off when she achieved her result in front of friends and family.

"I think I know how to display him to his best ability and highlighted his muscle and the way he moves with his weight," she said.

"At most lunch times, we go to the school cattle and tie them up and feed them.

"Everyone from the cattle club helped to pitch in."

Maddison was just one of the Monto competitors who helped create almost a clean sweep of wins in the cattle showing.

Savannah Goody is new to cattle showing but has fallen in love with it immediately.

"This is my second year being involved," she said.

"I got first in the stud judging for 13-15 years.

"I didn't get all the placings of the cattle right but gave reason for what I did place them.

"My next goal is to do well at the Rockhampton Show."

There is one Year 12 student in Monto's cattle club, and that's Luke Aisthorpe.

"I have been involved since Year 8," he said.

"It's just something I enjoy doing.

"I haven't qualified for regionals yet but there's still many chances left."

Other strong competitors at the Monto and District Show were from Rockhampton Grammar School and Biloela State High School.
