Hospitals get tick of approval in new report
THE Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service released the most extensive public reporting of clinical care in Queensland yesterday.
The landmark Quality of Care Report reviews the standard of services provided to patients in the 2014/2015 financial year at the Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Maryborough hospitals.
It showed the three hospitals were delivering quality care in most areas, only falling down in handwashing, pressure injuries, complaints processing, elective surgery waiting times and mandatory training.
The NewsMail asked for specific details on Bundaberg Hospital results but these were unavailable yesterday.
The new report delivers on the service's commitment to increase public awareness, strengthen health service accountability and drive quality improvement.
"By releasing the inaugural Quality of Care Report, we are taking an important step to voluntarily disclose the standard of our clinical care and other services to our community," Wide Bay Hospital and Health Board chairman Dominic Devine said.
"No longer will members of the public need to search for information on the quality of patient care; the WBHHS's key clinical data and information will be openly and trans
parently provided to our local communities on an annual basis.
"On behalf of the board, I congratulate chief executive Adrian Pennington and his team for the hard work that has been put into achieving the strong results in this report, and for committing to continuous improvement."
The report includes data on clinical measures such as rates of infection, mortality, medication errors and patient falls, but also includes other important aspects of WBHHS's service provision such as surgery waiting times and complaint turnaround times.
On each particular measure, the Quality of Care Report describes why it's important to quality care, rates the WBHHS's current performance against existing standards and provides a goal for the upcoming year.
Chief executive Adrian Pennington said the Quality of Care Report was an important public accountability measure to ensure the WBHHS team delivered the highest possible standard of service to patients and the public.
"Overall the WBHHS is achieving a high standard of clinical care and service provision across these different areas, but we acknowledge there are still areas for improvement and our team is committed to continuous advancement beyond national and state benchmarks," Mr Pennington said.
"The past year has been one of continuous clinical improvement, particularly around bedside care, resulting in a very favourable outcome during our accreditation review.
"But we're never content with simply reaching benchmarks - we're constantly looking for ways to improve our care and service standards. That has been demonstrated by the significant progress we've made in areas needing improvement since the period measured in this report. Our entire team is committed to delivering safe, quality care every day and this report highlights the great work they are doing."
