How to breed a top show cow

THIS year it has not been easy to bring a cow up to show standard.

Nonetheless, Irene Bishop and Gordon Coulston succeeded in elevating their cow, Wanora, to claim the prize for Champion Beast of Show in the Monto Show prime cattle judging.

Mr Coulston said the key to bringing up a show beast was picking the right feed at the right time.

Working primarily as a feed rationer, this year's dry season presented significant challenges.

"We were out of feed, completely and I do a lot of grain rations myself and I work it out and do the milling, mixing and running it out,” Mr Coulston said.

"As soon as it rained I took him off the grain bin because he was getting too fat, and then back to the grass now we had the good grass.”

Wanora, a two-year old male Santa Gertrudis, was selected at a young age to go into show conditions, being given the best feed and the most attention.

According to Mr Coulston, four out of ten cattle chosen were thrown out, leaving six remaining deemed "show material”.

It was not the only honour Mrs Bishop received at the Monto Show.

She also accepted the naming of the new showground loading ramp after her husband, former show president Graham Bishop.

"Going back in years, Graham was a very long supporter of the show, having been born into it where he showed a heifer with his mother when he was 12 years old,” Mrs Bishop said.
