Hyundai Tucson SUV arrives in Australia

With a Euro-inspired sleeker and more elegant look, the Tucson will lead the charge for Hyundai in the medium-SUV segment a clear indication that the Korean manufacturer is hoping to put a classier foot forward.

Prices will range from $27,990 for the entry-level manual Active to $38,240 for the Elite AWD with the top-of-the range diesel Highlander coming in at $45,490 excluding on-roads.

Offered as a front-wheel or all-wheel drive, buyers will also have the choice of three petrol engines - 2.0-litre MPi, 2.0  GDi and 1.6 T-GDi - and a  2.0-litre diesel, paired with a six-speed manual and auto transmission and a seven-speed auto in the 1.6 T-GDi AWD. The latter, a potent and fuel-efficient high-tech turbo-petrol, is the same engine that does duty in the Veloster SR Turbo.

Hyundai is promising a better on-road performance with exhaustive local testing ensuring the SUV is optimised for Australian conditions but we will bring you more news of that after attending the launch next week.

The Tucson is 65mm longer and 30mm wider than the ix35 with a longer wheelbase, too, but it is the more athletic stance and fluid design that most distinguishes it from the outgoing SUV with the new signature hexagonal grille, projector headlights and LED daytime running lights also doing their bit to reinforce the point.

Of course the premium inclusions are reserved for the Elite and Highlander variants but the Active and Active X - a new addition to the range - don't do too badly either making them real value-for-money propositions.  All four variants have a reverse camera as standard as well as a top-of-the-range multimedia system with Apple CarPlay capability and advanced safety features.

The Tucson will be backed by Hyundai's five-year unlimited kilometre warranty.
