Mundubbera resident celebrates 100th Birthday
MUNDUBBERA resident Ivy McKinlay celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday.
Mrs McKinlay began her celebrations with a horse and carriage ride around Mundubbera.
This was followed by a morning tea with family, friends and other patients at the Mundubbera Hospital.
She said she did not know how she felt about turning 100.
"I haven't had time yet to think about it," she said.
"It's been a good day so far, lovely to see all friends and relations."
Born on July 12, 1916, Mrs McKinlay (nee Mc'Innes) grew up in Byrnestown.
"Born and bred in the country," she said.
"I lived in an old house between Byrnestown and Gooroolba.
"I lived in that house until I went to Brisbane, I married in Brisbane."
Mrs McKinlay grew up in a large family, she had five brothers and two sisters.
The brothers have all passed away.
She was a keen pianist, starting lessons when she was five years old and also a keen horsewoman, riding in shows in the 1930s around the Burnett and Maryborough.
She mainly rode in hacks and jumps, winning many ribbons.
She met Robert McKinlay in Brisbane when she was working for the Women's National Emergency League.
They married at the Ann St Presbyterian Church in 1945.
Their only child, Carolyn McKinlay (now Free), was born in 1951.
"Ivy is the best mother and best friend any daughter could ever have," Mrs Free said.
Mrs McKinlay's grandson Brett was born in 1970, her great-grandson Luke was born in 1997 and great-granddaughter Jade was born in 2001.
Mrs McKinlay moved back to Mundubbera a number of years after Robert died in 1993.
Mrs McKinlay said she was very happy to receive a letter from Queen Elizabeth congratulating her on reaching 100, though she did not know what the secret was to reaching that milestone.
"I had good health," she suggests.
Mrs McKinlay has lived in the aged-care facility in the Mundubbera Hospital for about eight years.
Mrs Free said Mrs McKinlay is very thankful for the care she is given at the hospital and for the friendships she has made with staff and other residents.
