Jersey sponsorship a gold mine for junior soccer in Monto
SOCCER: The Monto Junior Soccer Club sported a professional new playing kit when they ran out for their first home game of the season last weekend, made possible by a sponsorship arrangement with Melior Resources, the parent company of the recently-rebooted Goondicum Mine.
The deal was far more lucrative than what club officials were expecting when they approached Goondicum at the beginning of the year.
Club president Belinda Barnett reached out to the mine to gauge their interest in a small sponsorship, but was blown away by the $3000 offer she received.
"They gave us a lot more than we asked for, which was amazing,” Mrs Barnett said.
"We were very surprised, the club doesn't have a lot of money so it makes a big difference for the kids.
"It was a very generous amount and we're really appreciative.”
The sponsorship allowed the club to purchase roughly 80 new jerseys - one for every player in each of the six junior teams.
Mrs Barnett was pleased to be able to upgrade the uniforms, which she said weren't on par with those of other teams.
"Unfortunately, our old jerseys were not as up-to-date as some of the other junior clubs that we play against,” Mrs Barnett said.
"Our players now have proper, professional-looking jerseys and they're over the moon.
"The kids had input into the new design and they love them, they have been really well-received by everyone.
"We are grateful to have Goondicum on board - it's a big deal for both the club and the community.
"It's great for the town to have the mine back and supporting local sport.”
Monto soccer players are now looking forward to their next home fixture in three weeks' time, on Saturday June 16, at the local sports grounds.
"It always feels good playing at home,” Mrs Barnett said.
"We run the canteen and it's a great way for us to raise money and support the club.”
