John McVeigh to quit state seat this month

TOOWOOMBA South MP John McVeigh will resign from State Parliament on Friday, April 29.

Mr McVeigh successfully secured the LNP pre-selection for the seat of Groom at the weekend, to be vacated by retiring MP Ian Macfarlane.

His retirement will spark a by-election in Toowoomba South.

Mr McVeigh suggested yesterday that the by-election should be held on the same day as the federal election.

But State Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg said it could be held as early as May.

"If you consider the instruments and legislation constitution in Queensland, a by-election would then be able to be held as early as the 28th of May," Mr Spingborg said.

"So we very much look forward to the consideration of that by the Queensland Government.

"This is a respectful amount of time."
