Johnathan Thurston signs on for another year with Cowboys

JOHNATHAN Thurston has extended his NRL career.

Thurston announced at North Queensland's midyear gala dinner on Friday night he has extended his contract by a year.

It ties him to the Cowboys until the end of the 2018 season.

The 2015 premiership winner has already said he will quit representative footy after the 2017 World Cup, but it was widely believed he would extend his contract.

"This club has given me so much over my 13 years here. I've played alongside some great talents, worked with amazing people and shared in phenomenal successes," Thurston said.

"It's been a real privilege to be associated with the North Queensland Cowboys and now that the deal is done, I can concentrate on my footy and helping my teammates on and off the field."

Thurston has won four Dally M Medals, three Golden Boots, and an NRL premiership since joining North Queensland from Canterbury as a youngster in 2005.

He famously slotted the extra-time field goal to drag Cowboys over the line in the 2015 grand final.

He's captained the club since 2007 and is just two games away from reaching 300 NRL appearances.

"Johnathan's a class act, is one of the fiercest competitors I've seen play rugby league and to have him see out his career here is wonderful news and a credit to all involved," Cowboys coach Paul Green said.

"He's developed into a true leader in that he leads by example. He's always a pleasure to coach and he's a true mentor for our younger guys coming through."
