Jury told of alleged rape attempt after molestations

A MAN attempted to rape his partner's daughter after he had molested her on several occasions over seven years, a jury was told on the opening day of his trial in the District Court in Mackay yesterday.

Crown prosecutor Judith Geary, in her opening statement, outlined the occasions on which the man had inappropriately touched the girl, who at the time was aged between five and 11.

The incidents occurred while the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and the girl were sitting in his car after he had taken her to his workplace, Ms Geary said.

The court was told the girl would sometimes join the man to help him with his work.

After the first incident, the girl had pushed away his hand and got out of the car and walked away, Ms Geary said; the man had allegedly followed in his car and said, "If you tell anyone things are going to get bad for you".

Ms Geary said the incidents of indecent treatment included touching the girl's upper and lower body, both under and over her clothing, with hands and mouth.

The man also touched himself while touching the girl, she said.

All incidents took place in the Mackay district.

The alleged rape attempt occurred in February 2008 at the house where they both lived.

The man has been charged with two counts of indecent treatment of children under 16, one count of indecent treatment of a child under 12 and one count of attempted rape.

Witnesses due to be called include the grand- mother of the girl's child- hood friend and the girl's mother.

The trial is due to continue today.
