RIO 2016: K4 crew out to defend gold medal

CANOE SPRINT: Australia has the chance to secure yet another "Oarsome Foursome" Olympic gold medal.

While the coxless fours dominated rowing at the Games in the 1990s, winning back-to-back gold in Barcelona and Atlanta, the canoe sprint's K4 team has the chance to win successive 1000m titles.

In London it was Murray Stewart, David Smith, Tate Smith and Jacob Clear who took out gold in that event.

This time it will be Ken Wallace teaming up with Clear, Riley Fitzsimmons and Jordan Wood.

"The team that we've got is a real mix between young and old," Wallace said before the Games. "The young guys, they don't give us an inch. They're biting at our heels the whole time."

Wallace who won gold in the K1 500m and bronze in the K1 1000m in 2008.

Men's K4 1000m preliminaries tomorrow night (10.50pm AEST), finals Saturday (11.12pm AEST)
