Kilkivan rider second in 80km endurance championship

BEING born in the saddle might have helped, but being urged to ride from childhood was nearly as effective, Lower Wonga endurance rider Fiona Fenech said yesterday.

The long-term Kilkivan district horse riding enthusiast had just come second in the internationally accredited 80km section of the 2016 Equestrian Australia Endurance Championships at Imbil.

She says the influence of her equestrian enthusiast father made it inevitable she would devote a fair slab of her life to horses.

The event, which continues today and tomorrow, will not only determine the new national endurance riding champion but is also the last opportunity for riders shortlisted to represent Australia internationally to impress the selection panel.

That international competition is the World Endurance Championships in Slovakia in September.

Fiona finished just behind Erin Krahne, from Josephville on Brisbane's south side, but ahead of Cooroy's Ute Jordan, who took third place.

The 160km national championships ride started at 3am and is expected to be all but finished by mid-afternoon.

The man behind the event venue, in picturesque mountain country between Imbil and Borumba Dam, is Matt Sample, founder of the Sterling Crossing Endurance Association and owner of Sterling Endurance Arabians.

Fiona trains horses on her Lower Wonga property and has lived in the Kilkivan district since childhood.
