Kyrgios cops year's biggest fine for Masters meltdown

NICK Kyrgios has avoided a suspension but received what's thought to be the biggest fine of the tennis year after his petulant display at the Shanghai Masters.

Governing body the ATP announced that the Australian would be be fined $21,800 for breaches of its code of conduct during his second-round match against Mischa Zverev on Wednesday.

The ATP said in a statement: "After completion of the on-site investigation, Kyrgios received the on-site maximum fine of $US10,000 for lack of best efforts, as well as a $US5000 fine for verbal abuse of a spectator, and a $US1500 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.”

No stranger to controversy, the world No.14 received a code violation for an audible obscenity during the 6-3 6-1 capitulation and at times appeared to give up on the match, admitting he "took the easy way out”.

He got into several verbal stoushes with spectators during the match as well, leading former Australian Davis Cup captain Wally Masur to suggest on Fox Sports that he should take the rest of the year off.
