Large turnout at Rotary Cup dinner
A LARGE crowd attended the Mundubbera Rotary Melbourne Cup Calcutta dinner at the Royal Hotel on Monday night.
The event, which has been going on for about 50 years, featured displays of racing history and a phantom race call by Whelan Racing Group member Tony Becker.
Royal Hotel owner Gary Palmer said the event was about getting people excited for the Melbourne Cup.
"It's fund raising for the Rotary Club of Mundubbera and it just adds a bit more atmosphere on the night and in the lead up to the cup,” Mr Palmer said.
"We try and get a person who rode in the Melbourne Cup, though at this time of year it's hard to get someone, as they've been invited down to Melbourne on behalf of the VRC.
"Of the speakers we have had in the past, we are pretty lucky to get them.”
The 2016 guest speaker was trainer Barry Baldwin.
