Man sentenced to jail for 76,000 child exploitation images

A 36-year-olf Gracemere man who police caught with more than 76,000 child exploitation images was sentenced to time behind bars in Rockhampton District Court today.

The man, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty to one count each of making child exploitation material and possessing child exploitation material as well as five drug charges.

The court heard police searched the man's Gracemere home for drugs in December 2014 when they found seven electronic devices containing 76,171 child exploitation images and videos.

Crown prosecutor Fleetwood said some of the material was "seemingly innocent" pictures of children which were digitally altered and the defendant had photo shopped his naked body into them.

"The aggravating feature is this is not a victimless crime, it creates a market for child exploitation material," Mr Fleetwood said.

Defence lawyer Tom Polley said his client was "curious" and "he was feeling anger when he made these images".

"It was not the case he ever wanted to harm a child or a female," Mr Polley told the court.

Judge Michael Burnett said there was a "significant amount of material across a range of categories".

"Plainly it was acquired over a significant period of time which indicates a degree of persistence with offending," he said.

The man also pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing dangerous drugs, namely cannabis, and possessing utensils used in connection with smoking a dangerous drug and one count of possessing utensils used in connection of a crime under the Drugs Misuse Act.

He was sentenced to 18 months and two and a half years imprisonment for each of nthe two child exploitation material charges, suspended after serving eight months with an operational period of three years.

For the drug charges he was sentenced to four terms of six months imprisonment and one of eight months with three years' probation, with all sentences to be served concurrently.
