Man jailed for Rockhampton Rugby Union Club robbery

SHAWN Todd Mailman was having a few beers in the Rocky Rugby Union Club on July 25 when he decided to steal calico bags and a coinage container from behind the bar.

When a staff member saw what he was doing, she yelled at him to stop and the pair engaged in a "tug of war" over the $50 worth of coins and empty bags until Mailman elbowed the woman in the face.

These were the facts heard in the Rockhampton District Court yesterday, where the 39-year-old pleaded guilty to attempted robbery.

Barrister Ross LoMonaco, who represented Mailman, said his client "couldn't explain" why he did it, as he was a frequent patron at the club.

In delivering his sentence, Judge Michael Burnett said the father of three's extensive criminal history played against him.

Mailman was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with a parole release date of June 30, 2016.
