Mourners hit: Man faces 26 counts of attempted murder

A man charged with murder following the death of a woman in the Cape York community of Kowanyama last Friday morning has today been charged with 26 counts of attempted murder.

Police will allege that at around 10.30am on Friday October 7, a vehicle drove into a residence on Kowanyama Street where a large number of mourners were gathered.

A 48-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and twelve other people were seriously injured.

A number of other people also sustained minor injuries.

On Tuesday, a 55-year-old Kowanyama man has been charged with 26 counts of attempted murder, as well as one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court at 2.15pm on Tuesday.
