MIDNIGHT Oil fans had their show cut short at Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Wednesday night after lead guitarist Jim Moginie tripped and fell on stage.

The founding member took a spill towards the end of the iconic band's encore set and had to be escorted off stage and into an ambulance for treatment.

Frontman Peter Garett came out on stage afterwards to let the crowd know Mr Moginie was healthy but too injured to come back on stage.

The band closed out the show with an unplanned acoustic performance.

Midnight Oil still have four shows schedule to wrap up their Great Circle 2017 World Tour, including a special Remembrance Day gig in Sydney and a return to Melbourne next week.

Fans will have to wait to find out of Mr Moginie's injury is serious enough to end his time on the tour or if a replacement can be found to play the remaining shows.

Several took to social media on Wednesday night to wish him well.
