Millions splashed into Roma Hwy intersection upgrades

Details have emerged about two major intersection upgrades on Roma's highway network.

The multimillion-dollar projects, announced by the Federal Government on January 20, are part of the first tranche of a Road Safety Program being delivered alongside the Queensland Government.

Assistant Regional Roads Minister for Queensland Bruce Saunders told the Western Star that the intersection of the Warrego and Carnarvon Highways on the east side of Roma (towards Surat) will be a full-width reconstruction.

The $8.65 million upgrade will add dedicated left and right turning lanes, as well as a merging lane from the Carnarvon Hwy westbound into Roma.

It will also have improved lighting and delineation.

A $830,000 upgrade to the Miscamble St and Carnarvon Hwy intersection will have new left turn lanes, cycle lanes, improved line marking, and barrier kerbs.

"Last year was one of the worst when it comes to number lives lost on our roads - so to be able make our roads safer sooner while also supporting employment in our regional communities is a great outcome as we enter the new year," Mr Saunders said.

"These projects will add to the record $26.9 billion in roads and transport projects being delivered by the Queensland Government over the next four years, the vast majority of that funding in the regions.

"Importantly, they give new opportunities for businesses as we continue to recover from COVID-19 and will spark more jobs in industries like construction, traffic management and engineering."

These projects will need to kick off and be completed very quickly as the Federal Government requires them to be finished by June 30 this year.
