Monto pool makes a splash this summer with fitness classes

MONTO pool is open for business and experienced manager Toni-Anne Ward is already making waves with a jam-packed schedule of swim and fitness classes.

Mrs Ward, a qualified swim coach and fitness instructor, has presided over the pool for 12 years and remains as enthusiastic as ever about the town's sole fitness facility.

She remembers the devastation when, in 2011, routine maintenance and the floods rendered the pool out of action for the entire season.

Seven years on and the pool's only challenge is competing for the attention of the younger generation, who she says are preoccupied with video games and smartphones.

Mrs Ward said she hopes to see more people making the most of the pool on weekends.

"I love seeing families come in and play to escape the heat,” she said.

"It's also a nice place to catch up for a lot of people who come in from out of town.

"I love everything about it.

"I really enjoy watching kids learn to swim and the confidence it gives them.”

The 2018-19 program kicks off after the school holidays from October 15, and includes:

  • Learn to swim classes and squad training - available by booking
  • Aquafit for kids - Tuesday 4.30pm
  • Active seniors and low-impact - Tuesday and Thursday 1pm
  • Aqua aerobics - Monday and Thursday 5.30pm
  • Fitness sessions (boxing, interval training, weights, bodyweight) - Monday, Wednesday and Friday 6am

The low-impact classes are perfect for people new to exercise, or those with injuries and health issues.

Seniors don't have to be able to swim to take part - the classes are run in the waist-deep shallow end of the pool.

"Swimming is low-impact on the joints and you don't have to break a sweat,” Mrs Ward said.

"It's a fantastic workout for people of all ages and fitness levels.

"You can work as hard as you choose.

"Because of the resistance of the water it can be up to 12 times as effective as exercising on land.”

Bookings are required for all classes.

Pool administrators have called for Montonians to attend the swim club AGM and information night at 5.30pm on Thursday, October 4.

The club desperately needs to attract members and establish a new committee. Everyone over the age of six is invited to join.

Bookings are required for all classes. For membership inquiries or bookings, get in touch on Facebook or contact the pool on 41661787.
