Mysterious love letters rediscovered in police search

CENTURY-old letters have been returned to Frank McCauley's great granddaughter Natalie after they had been stolen from the family holiday house in Bargara in 2007.

Mr McCauley was a prominent Mundubbera businessman and chairman of the Mundubbera Council for 12 years - he played a crucial role in the history of Mundubbera.

Mr McCauley had penned the letters in 1913 to his then sweetheart Lillian, prior to their marriage.

Natalie said she was amazed that these letters had been found and they gave an insight into family members she had never met.

"Frank passed away on June 12, 1978 and Lillian died one year after to the day on June 12, 1979," she said.

"That was before I was born."

Queensland Police officers uncovered the bundle of letters, dating back to 1913, while arresting a man at his Bundaberg home for alleged break and enters.

The man could not explain to Bundaberg CIB how he had obtained the letters and they were confiscated.

After some keen detective work by a Bundaberg administration officer, the author of the letters was identified as Frank McCauley.

"Over time (the letters) had been passed down through the family, until they were inherited by Natalie," the Queensland Police Service said in a statement.

"It was at this time that they made their way into the hands of our offender."

Earlier this month Natalie, who now lives in southern Queensland, was contacted and given the letters, allowing the love story to live on.
