THE Queensland government will introduce new dog breeding laws starting May 26.

These laws are aimed at introducing regulations that will allow all farm-bred puppies to be traced back to their breeder.

It requires all people giving away, supplying, selling or advertising dogs or puppies to have a supply number that identifies the registered breeder of that dog.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Bill Byrne said the laws will apply to anyone giving away, supplying, selling or advertising dogs born on or after that date.

"Many Queenslanders are concerned about the welfare of dogs and puppies being sold and supplied in our state,” Mr Byrne said.

"Now we will have a tool that we can build over time to address this gap and give people and family buying pets more information about the pet's background so they know they are buying from a reputable breeder.”

There are exceptions, Mr Byrne said.

Dogs born before May 26 will be exempt, as will primary producers breeding working dogs.

Primary producers must register as a breeder if they supply any dogs for non-working purposes.

Supply numbers for breeders can be obtained by registering with the Queensland Dog Breeder register.

Pre-existing breeder permit numbers supplied by local government or government-approved accredited breeding organisations can also be used as a supply number.
